These Four Rematches Could Be The Difference In Ohio State vs Cornell

While Ohio State and Cornell aren’t in the same conference, and don’t regularly dual each other, between CKLV and NCAAs, some of their wrestlers have gotten quite familiar with each other. It will be a fun dual that could go either way when the two meet in Tampa, Florida. However, that familiarity could be the difference maker. Below are the four rematches we will see on Saturday afternoon and how they’ve gone in the past.

Probable Lineups

125: #10 Malik Heinselman vs #18 Brett Ungar

133: #7 Jesse Mendez vs #3 Vito Arujau

141: HM Dylan D'Emilio vs #11 Vince Cornella

149: #3 Sammy Sasso vs #1 Yianni Diakomihalis

157: #21 Paddy Gallagher vs Cole Handlovic

165: #11 Carson Kharchla vs #7 Julian Ramirez

174: #5 Ethan Smith vs #4 Chris Foca

184: #5 Kaleb Romero vs Ethan Hatcher

197: #14 Gavin Hoffman vs #19 Jacob Cardenas

285: #13 Tate Orndorff vs Brendan Furman

125: #10 Malik Heinselman vs #18 Brett Ungar

125 could set the tone for the entire dual, and it doesn't get more of a toss-up than an even 1-1 split. Malik Heinselman and Brett Ungar have met twice this season, both at CKLV. Ungar won 4-0 in the first round, but Heinselman won 3-1 when the two met in the consolations.

149: #3 Sammy Sasso vs #1 Yianni Diakomihalis

These two have met twice in their careers with Yianni Diakomihalis winning by a combined score of 12-5. The pair first met in the 2022 CKLV finals with Yianni winning 6-2. Sasso closed the gap at NCAAs, but only by one point as Yianni won 6-3. Something is different this year, however - Yianni showed he is human with his first college loss since December of 2017. Granted, Austin Gomez and Sammy Sasso wrestle very different styles, but Gomez proved Yianni isn’t untouchable.

165: #11 Carson Kharchla vs #7 Julian Ramirez

While Julian Ramirez is the higher-ranked wrestler between these two, Carson Kharchla is actually 3-0 against him. The two met three times last season and although Kharchla won all three, Ramirez closed the gap each time. 15-7 in the CKLV quarterfinals, then 5-2 in the CKLV 3rd place match, and lastly 4-3 in the bloodround at NCAAs.

174: #5 Ethan Smith vs #4 Chris Foca

These two met earlier this season in the CKLV quarterfinals. Foca won a controlled 8-4 match where he won the takedown battle 3-1 and earned a riding time point. Foca is the favorite, but Smith is an All-American who has shown the ability to make adjustments and improve throughout his long career at Ohio State.
