The PIAA Wrestling Championships return to FloWrestling March 7-9 LIVE from the Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. All bouts will be streamed live starting with AA on Thursday morning at 9 am EST. AAA gets underway at 4 pm Thursday afternoon. This four-part series will preview each bracket for lightweights (107-145) and heavyweights (152-285) on both the AA and AAA sides. AA release will be followed by AAA. With only four returning qualifiers and two returning place winners, like most years, 107 pounds is pretty wide open. 

Top Bracket:

#4 Nicholas Salamone made the drop back down to 107 pounds for the postseason where he finished seventh last year as a freshman. He will likely see a familiar opponent in the quarterfinals in #3 Max Tancini. Tancini defeated Salamone 3-0 last year in the consolation quarterfinals before finishing sixth. I have Tancini taking this one again to make the top semifinals. #2 Alexander Diaz has his work cut out for him as the senior will be looking for his first state medal this weekend. He drew a round of 32 matchup against #5 Connor Lagier and if he were to win that one he will then face #10 Aiden Herndon. Following that Diaz would likely wrestle #7 Nolan Rice in the quarterfinals to set up a rematch with Tancini in the semifinals. Diaz won that matchup all the way back in early December, 4-2. It may be a long shot, but I have Diaz running the table and making it to the finals out of the top half. 

Bottom Bracket:

#1 Dominick Morrison has had an excellent season despite many of his quality wins coming in very tight decisions. Morrison is heavily favored to make the top semifinal. Returning qualifier with one of the of the best names in wrestling, Thunder Beard, will likely square off with #6 Emilio Albanese for the right to face Morrison in the semifinals. Albanese is favored there and will be my pick to make the semifinals. Morrison and Albanese have not hit this season but Morrison has done an outstanding job of grinding out close matches and for that reason is my pick to make the finals out of the bottom half. 

This is by no means a guarantee to happen in the finals as there is a lot of parity at this weight and a lot of guys have the ability to pick each other off throughout the bracket. Morrison and Diaz have hit twice this season with Morrison winning 1-0 and 3-2 decisions. Although they have been close, Morrison has been winning like that all year and has given me no reason to pick against him so he is my pick to win the 107 AAA PIAA Championship.

Returning fourth-place finisher Santino Sloboda has had an excellent season, currently with a record of 36-0 after taking out #1 in the country Landon Sidun for the Southwest Region title and may have solidified himself as a favorite at 114 pounds heading into the weekend. 

Top Bracket:

Returning third-place finisher Colby Martinelli sits at the top of the bracket and will likely see Sidun in the quarterfinals. Sidun was the #1 ranked 113-pounder in the country before dropping a 5-4 decision to Sloboda last weekend for the Southwest Region title. Despite taking that loss, Sidun has had an excellent year including taking third at Beast of the East and winning a Powerade title. I have Sidun coming back and making the semifinals out of the top side. Sidun will likely face #5 Gabriel Ballard in that top semifinal and I will take the freshman Sidun to make the finals out of the top half. 

Bottom Bracket:

Sloboda has a great draw to the semifinals in the quarter that he is highly favored in. The bottom quarter here is much more interesting as we have three returning medalists in it. Returning fifth-place finisher Braiden Weaver will face off with #7 Reef Dillard in the round of 16. Dillard has made huge improvements throughout the season and I am actually taking him to win that match and move on to the quarterfinals where he will likely see #2 Kaedyn Williams. Williams was a state champion as a freshman in 2021 and has made the semifinals every year of his career. Williams is currently 34-0 heading into PIAA’s and is my pick to hit Sloboda in the bottom semifinal. Both Sloboda and Williams are undefeated and have been excellent this year. Despite Williams already having a state title, I am taking Sloboda here as he has the best win with his win over Sidun, so I’m sticking with the hot hand. 

A rematch between Sloboda and Sidun is how I have 114 pounds playing out. I have seen Sidun make great adjustments in the past and I believe he will do the same thing here and avenge the loss from the Southwest Region final for his first state title. 

Prediction: Landon Sidun (Norwin) over Santino Sloboda (Butler)

This weight features three guys that have made a state final including Keanu Dillard who enters the weekend as the favorite to win his second PIAA title as just a sophomore.  

Top Bracket:

Returning PIAA runner-up and #2 Mason Ziegler is the top seed and will be heavily favored to make the top quarter. Ziegler has had a very strong senior season and is currently ranked #15 in the country. In the quarterfinals, he will likely hit #4 and two-time state place winner Tyler Kapusta. Kapusta is tough and can slow guys down, but I am taking Ziegler to make the top semifinal. Ziegler’s semifinal opponent will likely be #6 Tyson Cook. Cook is a three-time qualifier and is looking for his first PIAA hardware this weekend. That being said, I am still taking Ziegler to make his second-straight PIAA final. 

Bottom Bracket:

#3 Luke Willochell is a two-tme state medalist and was a runner-up in 2022. Willochell has a very unorthodox style and can put guys on their backs from a lot of places. Willochell is heavily favored to roll to the top semifinal on the bottom half. Returning PIAA champion and #1 Keanu Dillard will likely be Willochell’s opponent in the semifinals. Dillard capped off an impressive 24-0 freshman campaign last year with a PIAA title at 107 pounds. Dillard will likely face off against #7 and returning medalist Connor Smith in the round of 16 and from there should cruise to the semifinals. The Willochell-Dillard matchup could be very exciting, as both guys have big-point scoring abilities. Notably, Dillard has won 18 matches straight with bonus points heading into the weekend. Ultimately, I’m picking Dillard to win here, but I think Willochell will have his opportunities.

Ziegler and Dillard hit back in December in the consolation quarterfinals and it was Dillard taking the match 3-2. Although I believe Ziegler can win this match, I am sticking with the guy who has gotten it done here before.

Prediction: Keanu Dillard (Bethlehem Catholic) over Mason Ziegler (Quakertown)

Top Bracket:

#1 Andrew Binni is the top seed and was a runner-up to Pennsylvania legend Vinny Kilkeary at this weight class a year ago. Binni has a high pace and an elite hand fight as he has made tremendous jumps throughout his career as he is up to #13 in the country. Binni will likely hit #5 McKaden Speece in the quarterfinals in a match he will be favored to win. Returning qualifier and #3 Trey Wagner has had an excellent season and will be favored to make the semifinal out of the bottom quarter. I’m taking Binni to make it out of this top semifinal and back to the PIAA finals.

Bottom Bracket:

#2 Eren Sement has been third at the PIAA tournament the last two years and is the favorite to make the finals out of the bottom half this season. Sement’s likely semifinal opponent will be another two-time returning medalist, #4 Dean Houser. Houser has had a great season and could make this one competitive, but I believe Sement has jumped levels this season. Sement is up to #16 in the country and is my pick to make the finals out of the bottom semifinal. 

These two have not hit before to my knowledge, but it could be an awesome clash of styles. Binni pushes the pace from start to finish in every one of his matches, while Sement is very good at scrambling and slowing guys down. When it comes down to it, I’m sticking with Binni to make it happen with his hand-fight and leg attacks to close out his career with a PIAA title.

Top Bracket:

#1 Tahir Parkins was fourth at this tournament a year ago after a disappointing finish as a freshman. Parkins is ranked #14 in the country and is a heavy favorite to make the finals out of the top half. Parkins could be tested early, however. Two returning medalists, #2 Gavin Sheridan and #7 James Garcia, will be hitting in the round of 16 with the winner likely meeting Parkins in the quarterfinals. Sheridan was upset in the Southeast Region finals last weekend against Branden Rozanski which put him in a tough spot in the bracket. Sheridan beat Garcia 11-1 earlier in the season, so I have him making that quarter against Parkins. There, I have Parkins moving on to the semifinals. #4 Mason Kernan and #6 Chris Dennis will likely meet in the round of 16, with the winner being favored to make the semifinals against Parkins. Kernan is my pick to make the semifinals out of the bottom quarter. I believe Parkins is the better guy there and will make his first final.

Bottom Bracket:

#10 Rozanski put himself in a decent position on the bottom after defeating Sheridan last weekend. He will be favored to make the quarterfinals where he will likely hit #3 and returning medalist Benjamin Fanelli. That match could be tight, but I have Fanelli moving on to the semifinals from there. #8 Kai Vielma has had an excellent freshman campaign and will be favored to make the quarterfinals against likely #5 Tyler Adams. Adams has been very good this year and is looking for his first state medal as a senior, so I believe he will be poised to win that one to make the semifinals. In the semifinals, I have Adams taking out Fanelli to punch his ticket to the finals. 

In my opinion, Parkins is the best guy in this bracket and I believe he will prove it this weekend for his first PIAA title.

It’s pretty rare to find a state bracket with three nationally ranked wrestlers, but that’s exactly what we have here in the AAA 139-pound bracket. #4 (at 144) Maddox Shaw, #11 Brock Weiss, and #12 Dalton Perry have all made a state final in their career, with Perry winning the 126-pound title back in 2022 as a freshman with a win over Shaw in the semifinals along the way. With 12 returning qualifiers and 6 former state medalists, this bracket is absolutely loaded. 

Top Bracket:

#1 Maddox Shaw has overcome some inconsistent performances from earlier in the season and is the favorite coming into the weekend. That being said, he will have a tough opponent early. #5 Michael Turi and #7 Liam Flanagan hit in the round of 16 with the winner likely taking on Shaw. Shaw defeated Turi 1-0 in the semifinals of the Mid Winter Mayhem tournament back in January so I anticipate that one to be highly competitive, but I have Shaw making the semifinals. #2 Brock Weiss picked up a huge win over #3 and 2022 PIAA champion Dalton Perry in the Northwest Region final and will likely cruise to the semifinals. Weiss was a PIAA finalist in 2022 and has not lost since as he was 29-0 last season before missing the postseason and is 30-0 this season heading into the weekend. This matchup between Shaw and Weiss will be awesome and highly competitive. However, when Shaw is on, there are very few guys in the country that can beat him and he’s my pick to get back to the finals. 

Bottom Bracket:

#7 Jack Campbell avenged a loss from earlier in the season and defeated Michael Turi in the Northeast Region final and put himself in a great position to make the semifinals out of the top quarter. Dalton Perry will be heavily favored in his opening match but it will get much tougher from there. Two returning medalists, #3 Seamus Mack and #4 Blake Reihner will likely hit in the round of 16 with the winner taking on Perry in the quarterfinals. Mack is my pick to hit Perry in the quarterfinals, and although I believe this match will be tight, I have Perry advancing on to the semifinals. Perry has not had the most consistent season of his career, but I believe he will put it all together this weekend and make it back to the finals. 

This will be a rematch from the 2022 PIAA semifinals at 126 pounds back when both guys were freshmen where Perry defeated Shaw 3-1 and would go on to win a PIAA title while Shaw would go on to finish third. Perry was third a year ago while Shaw dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Perry’s teammate Luke Simcox in the finals to finish as a runner-up. As I mentioned earlier, few guys in the country can defeat Shaw when he is wrestling at his best, and I believe he will make it happen this weekend for his first PIAA title. 

Prediction: Maddox Shaw (Thomas Jefferson) over Dalton Perry (Central Mountain)

Both #1 Luke Simcox and #2 Pierson Manville are returning state champions, as Manville won a title at 138 pounds back in 2022 and finished second last season while Simcox won the 133-pound title last season. These two met in the finals of the Northwest Region final two weeks ago and it was Simcox coming away with the 3-2 win in ultimate tiebreakers. The greater significance of this win for Simcox was that Manville had been the undisputed #1 guy in the country all year long and many thought he would cruise to his second PIAA title after winning Ironman and Powerade titles earlier this season. We will likely see this one again with a state title on the line this weekend as both guys will look to close out their careers with a second PIAA crown. 

Top Bracket:

Simcox will likely cruise to the semifinals out of the top seed. He will likely see a familiar opponent in that semifinal in #3 Evan Petrovich. Petrovich has had an excellent season and will be looking for his first PIAA medal this weekend. These two met back in the first weekend of December and it was Simcox dominating with an 8-0 major decision and I feel that is likely to happen here again with Simcox making his way back to the finals. 

Bottom Bracket:

Despite the loss to Simcox in the Northwest Region final, Manville has had an incredible season and has been utterly dominant otherwise. I foresee him dominating to the semifinals where he will likely see returning medalist #7 Elias Long. Manville is the pick here to set up a rematch in the finals with Simcox. 

This rematch will unquestionably be close as both guys are very good at what they do. Manville is a heavy hand fighter with a high pace and good in control ties, while Simcox is a really good counter wrestler and strong in the top position. I could see mat wrestling being the deciding factor here as it was in the Northwest Region final as Simcox won in UTB. However, Manville has been the best guy in the country the entire season outside of that match and has always performed well at this tournament and he is my pick to get revenge over Simcox for his second PIAA crown.
