What: U.S. Olympic Trials
Weight: 62 kg (women’s freestyle)
When: April 19-20
Where: State College, Pennsylvania (Bryce Jordan Center)
How to watch: Peacock

This is the weight to watch if you want intrigue.

Kayla Miracle earned a spot in the best-of-three finals after she qualified the weight for the United States at the Pan-Am Olympic Qualification tournament in February. Miracle won silver medals in the 62 kg class at the 2021 and 2022 World Championships but went 1-1 in 2023 and didn’t medal.

That left the former Campbellsville star on the outside of a weight class she has owned domestically since 2019. Had she not won Pan-Ams, she would have been forced to wrestle through the entire challenge tournament.

Two wrestlers in this bracket won World medals last year at non-Olympic weights, earning each a semifinal spot in the challenge tournament. Jennifer Page won bronze at 59 kg and Macey Kilty won silver at 62 kg. Each will have to win two matches for the right to face Miracle in the finals.

Mallory Velte is another World medalist in the mix but will have to wrestle through the entire tournament to make the finals. Velte won World bronze medals in 2018 (62 kg) and 2022 (65 kg) but missed last year’s World team at 65 when she fell to Kilty in straight matches at Final X.

Senior World Medalists In The 62 kg Olympic Trials Bracket

Kayla Miracle62 kg2022Silver
Mallory Velte65 kg2022Bronze
Jennifer Page59 kg2023Bronze
Macey Kilty65 kg2023Silver

Kilty, Page, and Velte have wins over Miracle but Velte has the most historic success. The former Simon Fraser star defeated Miracle at 2018 Final X to make the team, where she eventually won a medal at the World Championships.

Add in William Penn’s Adaugo Nwachukwu who recently won her third NAIA title and a bronze medal at the U20 World Championships. Nwachukwu defeated Page in the 2023 US Open final at 62, forcing Page to 59 kg. That move eventually paid off when she won a World medal and a semifinal spot.

Miracle is still the favorite based on match history and results, but she’ll have her hands full regardless of who she faces. Kilty took the second match against Miracle at the 2020 Olympic Trials and the Pan-Am Qualifier wrestle-off but dropped the series both times.

Velte won two of three matches against Miracle at 2018 Final X but dropped straight matches the following year before moving up a weight. Page took the first match against Miracle at a postponed 2022 Final X but dropped the next two.

The remainder of the field will do their best to win matches in the tournament's most competitive field. Lauren Louive is a US Open champion who reached 2019 Final X but it’s a tall task against such a loaded field.

College national champions Katie Lange, Ashlynn Ortega, and Claire DiCugno are entered, as are Maya Letona and Savannah Cosme.

The wise bet is Kilty vs Miracle in the finals, but funny things happen at the Olympic Trials.
