Yelena Makoyed upset Kylie Welker, 6-4, in a finals rematch of the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships.
Yelena Makoyed picked up her biggest win of the season on wrestling's biggest domestic stage.
The former North Central star finished second at the National Collegiate Wrestling Collegiate Women's Championships at 170 pounds to Iowa's Kylie Welker, 11-0, after falling to Welker 11-3 in the National Duals finals a few weeks earlier. Both matches were the final and deciding match for the Hawkeyes to win team titles over the Cardinals during the 2024 season.
Makoyed got one back at the Olympic Trials with a 6-4 win over Welker during the 76-kilogram semifinals. The Orangevale, California, native scored the first six points of the match before Welker secured a takedown as time expired in the first period. The Hawkeye star scored another takedown in the second but Makoyed held on for the win. She will face Kennedy Blades in the challenge tournament finals for the right to face six-time World champion Adeline Gray in the best-of-three finals.
