A full serving of Turkey.
That's what the three U.S. competitors were treated to on the final day of World Championship action in Budapest, Hungary. Ellis Coleman (66KG), Andy Bisek (74KG), and Robbie Smith (120KG), all fell to Turkish opposition.
For the second straight day, not one U.S. wrestler even made repechage. On the week, only 1 of the 7 on the U.S. Greco team did (Spenser Mango took 5th). As a result, the U.S. medal drought in Greco sits at 4 years. They haven't had a medalist since 2009 when Dremiel Byers took Silver. It's the longest U.S. drought since the four-year Greco medal gap from 1980-1983.
Ellis Coleman lost 2-2 on last point scored. Andy Bisek went 1-1. Robbie Smith looked good early as he cruised through his first two bouts. In the quarters, he lost to the #1 ranked wrestler at the weight, Riza Kayaalp, who was Bronze in London. He was eliminated when Kayaalp lost the very next round to an Iranian opponent.

It was a humbling day for the U.S. as all three competitors failed to reach even the repechage. Jesse Thielke (60KG), Jordan Holm (84KG), and Caylor Williams, all of whom were making their World Championships debut, combined to go 3-3.
Thielke, a Junior World Bronze medalists last year, got off to a hot start as he posted a tech and a pin in his opening bouts. But he struggled to score in the quarterfinals against Korea. The match was 5-4 at the break, and Thielke didn't score in the second period.
Jordan Holm went 1-1, while Williams was disqualified in his first match with cautions on passive and headbutting.

Unshakeable.
Rival competitors, injuries, cheap shots, wrestlers shutting down on him, time. Nothing could stop the determination and resolve of Jordan Burroughs, the pound-for-pound best wrestler in the world.
Unshakeable and Unblemished.
Burroughs is now 65-0 in international competition after winning his 3rd straight World/Olympic title.
Incredible as that sounds, the back story sounds even more fictitious; on August 22nd, while training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Burroughs broke his ankle in the morning workout. The break required surgery.
Ladies and gentlemen, Jordan Burroughs just outscored his opponents 34-3 with a metal plate and five screws in his ankle 27 days after surgery.
Congrats, Jordan. You deserve it. You're the greatest athlete on Planet Earth.

DAY II - 60KG, 84KG, 120KG
The U.S. will head into Wednesday with just one Men's Freestyle weight remaining, with no medals. On the first two days of action, six weights were wrestled and the U.S. Team had a frustrating perfomance.
Tough draws, blown leads, bronze match shortcomings, they were all part of the malady.
Both Angel Escobedo (55KG) and Tervel Dlagnev (120KG) reached a medal bout but came up short. Reece Humphrey seemed poised for a medal run with a 6-0 lead in the semi's before exhausting it in the second period. JD Bergman (96KG) had a 3-0 lead before making the error of going upperbody. Keith Gavin went 1-1 in a sort of expected ledger. And Brent Metclaf (66KG) had the misfortune of drawing a two-time World Champion in his first bout.
All-in-all, the team hasn't wrestled bad. It seems to be the finer points. There's optimism here, and a bright side to be found in our performance. But we miss those medals.
Here's hoping we get one of those Golden ones tomorrow.
