It's the 40th Anniversary of the Dapper Dan Classic, and it will almost certainly be one of the best.
One of America's truly unique and special wrestling events, the Dapper Dan is a confluence of the nation's best seniors and Pennsylvania's best seniors. That formula has produce many memorable occasions and showcased some of the finest wrestling the country has to offer.
Throughout the 39 years of the Classic, the list of competitors has been a "Who's Who" of wrestling stars. Nate Carr, Randy Lewis, Coleman Scott, Jordan Oliver, and Chris Bono have won Outstanding Wrestler honors.
With such a history, it's tough to suggest 'Best Ever.' But that's just what we might have in the Dapper Dan this year.
Below is the USA Line-up, and the way the matchups have come together, it may be the most anticipated Dapper Dan of all time.
Think of it: Thomas Haines vs. Nick Nevills; a rematch of FloNationals in Tyler Berger vs. Jason Nolf. And on down the line.
Northwestern commitments lead the way. Three future Wildcats are on Team USA. Penn State and Stanford have two apiece. Oklahoma State has two commitments in this year: Ryan Blees on USA, and Chance Marsteller, who is the only wrestler the committee has already selected for Team PA.
With three representatives on Team USA, Illinois leads the way. The only other state with multiple reps is New Jersey, with two.
Adam Tirapelle, who won an NCAA title at the University of Illinois, has been named the honorary coach for Team USA. His brother, Alex, wrestled in Dapper Dan XXVII in 2001. Adam is currently the assistant coach at Clovis High School (CA).
In our January Dapper Dan Report for FloInsider, we correctly predicted 12 of the 13 team members.
