It was one of the rare, nail-biting situations where you look at the upcoming match-ups, try your darndest to do the math, and are still left scratching your head.
Heading in to the 157lb final where Derek St. John was to meet James Green, Iowa held a surprisingly late lead over 3-time defending NCAA Champions, Penn State, by 3.5pts.
That lead would hold when Green beat DSJ. And then the math started.
Penn State had hammers coming with Taylor and Ruth in head-to-heads with Iowa's Nick Moore and Ethan Lofthouse, respectively. Morgan McIntosh was also in the finals for the Nittany Lions with Matt Brown going for 3rd against Logan Storely, and Jon Gingrich a decided underdog against Mike McMullan of Northwestern.
Iowa had opportunities with Evans, who beat Brown in the semi's and faced Robert Kokesh (Nebraska) in the finals, and with Nathan Burak and Bobby Telford in placing matches.
In the end, it was another reminder of just how important the bonus point duo of David Taylor and Ed Ruth have been to the Nittany Lions the last 4 years.
When David Taylor earned the major decision over Nick Moore, and the accompanying bonus points, Penn State took a 1.5pt lead, 134.5 to 133.
Evans fell to Kokesh, while Matt Brown earned a point for 3rd. After Ruth majored Lofthouse the Lions had mathematically clinched the Lions' 4th straight Big Ten title with a lead at 7.5pts, 140.5 to 133.
