W2W4 At The Dave Schultz Memorial

With over 250 entrants between Men's Freestyle and Greco and Women's Freestyle the 2015 Dave Schultz Memorial will boast some of the best senior level wrestlers in the United States and 15 other Nations. Below are some of the top story lines of the tournement.

The Return Of Mason Manville:

Last we saw Mason, he dropped his match at The Ironman to Graham’s Alex Marinelli in Overtime. After that runner-up finish Manville elected to leave Blair and head to the Minnesota Storm Training Center. The future Nittany Lion is making his Senior Level debut at the Schultz and is entered at both Men’s Greco and Freestyle at 66kg and 70kg respectiely.

Manville is no stranger to success at the International styles as he has taken home multiple Fargo National Titles as well as a Cadet World Championship. He will be challenged in Freestyle by World Team Member Nick Marable and University National Champion, Jason Chamberlain.

On the Greco side, Manville will have some great competitors in #5-Alejandro Sancho, #6- Jamel Johnson and #7-Marco Lara.  Sancho is coming of a dominant showing at the Bill Farrell where he took home a first place finish.

The Gauntlet at 57kg:

Arguably the deepest weight at this year’s Schultz, the 57kg bracket is loaded with talent. Joe Colon is fresh off a win at FPL4 over Conor Beebe, and back in November took home the title at the Bill Farrell International, where he capped off his tournament off with a 13-6 win over Dan Mitcheff who is also entered in this bracket. Mitcheff also had some quality wins at the Bill Farrell with a win over Olympian and #1 ranked-Sam Hazewinkle and a pin over #2-Andrew Hochstrasser, who will also be at the Schultz.  Mitcheff, the fourth ranked 57kg in the nation, also beat #5-Tyler Graff for third place at the 2014 US Open.

Colon also has a win over Brandon Precin, who pulled an upset over World Team Member Angel Escobedo. Both Escobedo and Precin are entered as well.

Tyler Graff has competed on a Junior World Team as well as a University World Team and took home a bronze medal at the 2013 US Open.

Northwestern Redshirt, Stevan Micic also looks to gain some quality wins at the senior level. Throwing more talent into the mix, Frank Perrelli, Jarrod Garnnett, Nikko Triggas and Utah Valley Associate Head Coach Erkin Tadzhimetov are all entered at 57kgs.

Retherford Unleashed:

Zain Retherford is entered at Men’s Freestyle at 65kgs. Retherford knows how to win big matches and he has shown that with a win over 3X National Champion, Logan Steiber. Zain finished fifth at last years NCAA tournament and has also won a Freestyle World Championship.

2X National Champion #6-Jordan Oliver is also entered here and has a runner up finish at the 2014 U.S. World Team Trials. Oliver’s diverse style could suit him well here, he can score in about every position.

World Team Member, and fifth ranked, Reece Humphrey will also make an appearance here, but took a loss to Oliver in the 2014 World Team Trials.

Clayton Foster Looks To Continue His Dominance:

Just one week after doubling his way to a dominant win over 2X NCAA Champion Ben Askren at FPL 4, #2-Clayton Foster is enters himself at a deep 86kg bracket. Foster showed he can beat anyone in the world at last years World Cup where he earned a gold medal.

Foster will have some great competition this tournament in guys like Deron Winn, #5-Robert Hamlin, Austin Trotman and Richard Perry.

Fourth ranked at 97kgs, Deron Winn has looked great since dropping from 96kgs down to 86kgs. Like Foster, Winn just wrestled at FPL 4 last week and secured a 4-2 win over Max Askren. Winn also has a great win over Jon Reader to advance to the Finals of the Bill Farrell but dropped a tight 5-4 match to Richard Perry.

Three Way Battle at 48kgs:

Heading over to the Women’s division at 48kgs, three standouts highlight this bracket. Olympic Bronze medalist #3-Clarissa Chun looks to avenge a loss taken from #2-Victoria Anthony at the Bill Farrell.

Victoria Anthony’s pin over Chun in the semis propelled her to the finals with a matchup with top ranked Alyssa Lampe, who took a 5-0 match to win the Bill Farrell. All three are entered at this weight and will prove for some great matches.
