Adam Coon will go for gold in the Greco-Roman 130 kg final at the 2018 UWW Senior World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Join us as provide live updates of the first American wrestling in a Greco-Roman world championship final since Dremiel Byers in 2009, also in the heavyweight division.
GOLD MEDAL MATCH: Adam Coon vs Sergey Semenov
Coon will face off with a Russian with the ultimate prize on the line. Adam has wrestled Semenov before, at the 2014 Greco-Roman Junior World World championships. Semenov won that semifinal match 3-1 and would go on to take gold, while Coon would battle back for third and a bronze medal. Semenov also has a bronze medal from the Rio Olympics and a gold at the U23 World Championships in 2017. Coon has a cadet gold in freestyle from 2011 and two bronze medals from the 2014 Junior World Champions, one in freestyle and one in Greco-Roman.
And here we go!
Inside of 30 seconds Semenov gets a step out point. Semenov locked up around Coon's body and gets air time. Wow, huge throw for Semenov to make it 5-0. A little over a minute into the match and Semenov gets another body lock and another fearless back arch and four more to end the match. A 9-0 tech fall for Russia and a silver medal for Adam Coon.
So not the ending anyone rooting for Team USA was hoping for. Credit to Semenov for his incredible power and technique. Still a tremendous showing by Coon, notching four pins on his way to the gold medal match. A lot for him and the Greco-Roman program to build off.
