The Buckeyes do this every year, as head coach Tom Ryan makes it a priority to try to have a dual in the gym where his seniors used to compete. Martin was 171-15 at McDonogh, winning three National Prep titles under coaches Pete Welch and Joe Bakewell.
It will be the eighth college dual of the year, and the last one happening on Saturday night. It's the first action of the season for both teams, but it case that wasn't enough, here are five more reasons you should be watching this dual on Saturday night.
1) Ohio State Replacing Three, Four-Time All-Americans
For the first time in NCAA history, a team had three seniors at the same time, all of whom placed all four tries at the national tournament. At 125, sophomore Brakan Mead will take the Mat to replace 2015 national champ Nathan Tomasello. Replacing Bo Jordan at 174 is Te'Shan Campbell, last year's starter at 165. Lastly, Gary Traub will be the new heavyweight after beating Chase Singletary 3-2 in the wrestle-off.
2) New Look Navy Coaching Staff
Although Joel Sharratt is still the head coach, his two top assistants in Nate Engel and Cody Cleveland both left. As those two did the lion's share of recruiting, it will be interesting to see the team when the guys who may have brought them in are now gone. This isn't a "true" home dual for the Midshipmen, either, as they will be about an hour north of Annapolis.
3) Myles Martin Homecoming
And why is Navy traveling an hour north? Because the match is being held at the McDonogh school in Owings Mills, MD. Every year Martin was in high school, he would wrestle all of his home duals in this gym, as well as begin the year with the Ray Oliver tournament and end the year with the Maryland Independent State tournament, right before National Preps. Martin is unquestionably one of the greatest wrestlers in McDonogh history.
4) #2 Micah Jordan vs #19 Jared Prince
The only ranked vs ranked matchup happens at 149lbs. Jordan is returning to his sophomore year weight, where he finished fourth back in 2017. Prince was 21-6 last year at 149, making the EIWA finals but going 0-2 at the NCAA tournament. They've never met before and Jordan walks in as the favorite.
5) First Look at Kaleb Romero
We already mentioned the All-Americans Ohio State needed to find successors for, and the old cliche is that great programs don't rebuild, they reload. Part of that reloading process changed course when Gary Traub beat Chase Singletary in the wrestle-off, but it also included Te'Shan Campbell and Romero switching weights. This isn't just a one year problem for the Buckeyes, either, as Joey McKenna, Micah Jordan, and Myles Martin all graduate after this season. So for the group of freshmen that were brought in from the classes of 2017 and 2018, Romero will be the first to step into the varsity lineup.
Check him out below against his likely opponent, Tanner Skidgel, in the Round of 12 from the U.S. Open.
