WATCH LIVE

Here are the Cowboys getting a pre-match warm-up, a little more than a half hour from the scheduled 1 p.m. ET start time.

Some notes from the weigh-in sheets:

  • Both teams get an extra point because Oklahoma State wrestled Princeton yesterday.
  • Fix and Suriano both weighed in about half a pound over 133.
  • Nick Gravina did not weigh in, as he is still battling multiple injuries. Joe Grello and Willie Scott weighed in at 174, and one of them will presumably bump up.
  • Kaden Gfeller (149), Andrew Shomers (165), Joe Smith (174), Jacobe Smith (184) and Dakota Geer (197) all weighed in a couple pounds below scratch, perhaps leaving open the possibility that they all still drop back down at some point? Time will tell!

Here is some Big J reporting about the crowd situation:

Here is some more journalism 101 from your humble correspondent:

  • Scarlet Knight alumni Anthony Perrotti (three-time national qualifier, NCAA eighth in 2014, NCAA eighth in 2016), Billy Smith (four-time national qualifier, NCAA round of 12 in 2016) and Scott Winston (four-time national qualifier, NCAA round of 12 in 2011) will be honored by Rutgers before the dual. Additionally, Scott Delvecchio (three-time national qualifier, NCAA sixth in 2018) is back in town. All three honored RU alums got a large round of applause from the rapidly filling arena.
  • Rutgers will be hosting a multitude of recruits, including 2019 commits JoJo Aragona and Rob Kanniard.
  • The chicken buffet in the media room is excellent.
  • New Jersey Regional Training Center head coach and three-time senior freestyle world team member Reece Humphrey is in the building.
  • There is a DJ, he is very good, in my amateur estimation.
  • The concourse is very busy, and the lines for the restrooms are not short, perhaps due to the pre-match tailgating I have heard tale of.

Here is FloWrestling's own Willie Saylor with more form Reece:

We're only two minutes away from 1 p.m. ET, but the official countdown clock in the arena says seven more minutes, so we may have to wait a bit before first whistle.

The lights go down right at one o'clock and we start the introductions. And that was the national anthem so we are ready to rock. A few empty seats here or there, but people still walking to their seats. It's going to be packed.

125 Pounds

#4 Nick Piccininni (Oklahoma State) vs. Shane Metzler (Rutgers)

First period: Pich with a low ankle pick that he converts early for a two-point lead. Piccininni gets a tilt for four back points, and Metzler gets hit for another stall, so it's 6-0 as time expires.

Second period: Pich starts down and escapes almost instantly. RT at 2:39. Pich with another takedown and four more near fall makes this a 14-0 score. RT is locked up but does not get awarded until the match goes a full seven (if it does).

Third period: The match does not go seven minutes, Pich gets another takedown and it's a 16-0 tech fall.

133 Pounds

#6 Daton Fix (Oklahoma State) vs. #2 Nick Suriano (Rutgers)

As high schoolers, Daton and Nick wrestled in a 30-minute match in 2014 at Who's #1. Now they're wrestling in front of thousands of people as D1 athletes and national title contenders. And we're underway.

First period: Collar ties and snap downs and lots of shouts from the Jersey crowd urging on their guy. Ninety seconds in and no scores or serious threats. The three minutes can only be described as cautious. No stalls for either guy as the period ends 0-0.

Second period: Fix goes underneath to start the second. Fix is up to his feet and peels hands to escape in about 10 seconds. Back in neutral, a couple half shots from each guy. Snap down from Suriano, but Fix quickly back into position, no harm done. Crowd getting behind Suriano with a little over 30 seconds left in the second. Time runs out with the score 1-0, neither wrestler wants to pull the trigger from neutral so far.

Third period: Suriano's time on bottom. Suriano sits out. Fans want either locked hands or a stall. Suriano eventually peels and is out, tying the score 1-1. RT eight seconds in favor of Fix, so not a factor. Is seven minutes not enough for these two, do they want to go to overtime? A half shot by Suriano and the crowd angrily demands a stall call, but they won't get it. A half shot from Fix that goes nowhere and here we go to sudden victory.

SV: More cheers from the crowd as one more minute goes on the clock. Any score will win it for either wrestler. Still no stall warning on either guy. Not sure who ride outs would favor here as one minute passes without a score or any serious threats.

TB1: Suriano starts on bottom. Suriano sits and again fans want locked hands. Suriano escapes after 11.3 seconds. The Rutgers corner threw the challenge brick and want to see if there were locked hands. Officials are reviewing. The replay in the arena gives a good view of the action. If there was locking hands it was a momentary overlap. Not sure how the refs will call this. Call stands, no locked hands, although John Smith and the OK State coaches are still mad. Not sure about what. This was a close one, but I think they made the right call. And now we're back in neutral for 18 more seconds. No scores, Fix will go underneath for 30.

TB2: Fix quickly up to his feet. Fix throws in a whizzer, and now Suriano gets called for locked hands. And Fix gets the escape. That could be the difference maker. And it is. Fix gets the victory by the score of 3-2!

Or does he? The call will be reviewed. Replay goes on the arena big board and the crowd doesn't like it. Looks like Fix's hand did touch with Suriano's hands locked around the waist, but I believe there is reaction time? Not sure, just happy I don't have to make this call.

Still reviewing. The pause does give the capacity crowd some time to do some loud "R! U!" call-and-response cheers. The call is overturned! John Smith is very unhappy. Rutgers coach Scott Goodale claps his hands and we get another period of sudden victory!

Or do we? Refs still reviewing. John Smith continues to make is displeasure known.

Call is reversed, it is officially official. Now we just need to figure out where we restart. In neutral for SV2 or back on the mat with the clock back to where it was when the overturned call was made? Anybody got a rulebook handy? The lack of wrestling is less than ideal, but honestly, it's building up quite a bit of anticipation for this second sudden-victory period. And, as mentioned, the DJ is quite good and keeping everyone entertained by spinning some classic jams. MC Hammer's seminal work, "U Can't Touch This" is currently playing.

No SV2 yet! Suriano will get a chance to ride out and win! Twenty-four seconds on the clock, Suriano with a 2-1 advantage. Fix is up to his feet on the clean restart, but Suriano does a better job tying up the hands. Brings him down once. Tries to throw in a leg. Fix is up to his feet fighting hands. OK State throws the challenge brick. Fix is out! We stop time again! Only 0.7 on the clock with the score tied now 2-2. Did Suriano lock hands this time? Not sure, he may have had a 2-on-1 that time. And it's confirmed, no locked hands. NOW we go to SV2.

SV2: One way or another we get a marathon with these two! Head fakes, collar ties and hand fighting. Still not much by the way of committed shots. And there's a hands to the face call. One point Fix. And that's it. In sudden victory it's a hands to the face call that ends it. Lots of boos, as expected.

Hmm... gonna save my thoughts on this match for later. Eight more matches to go in the meantime!

141 Pounds

#13 Kaid Brock (Oklahoma State) vs. Peter Lipari (Rutgers)

First period: You can usually count on Kaid Brock to deliver some action. He gets behind Lipari and with a tight waist and ankle pick brings Peter down for two. Lipari is up and out fairly quickly, we've wrestled a minute so far in this one. Reattack off Lipari's shot gives Brock two more. A couple mat returns for Brock but eventually Lipari earns his second escape. A duck under almost sends Brock scooting past Lipari completely, but he swings around back to collect his third takedown in short time. Lipari tries to switch several times but Kaid won't let him go. The period ends 6-2.

Second period: Lipari chooses down. More mat returns from Brock. Lipari gets the escape but Brock is right back in on a shot. Lipari continuing his switch series and eventually gets a far ankle and high hips and collects two for a takedown. It's 6-5 in favor of Brock, who also has 1:14 of RT.

Third period. Bock chooses down, Lipari will try to ride for at least 15 seconds. Caution on Liapri as more boos rain down from the stands. Liapri managed to ride for exactly 15 seconds, but unfortunately for him, Brock gets a reversal for two points and the RT ticking back in his favor. A restart at 1:33 and Lipari gets out quickly. RT at 1:11 though. Eight to six on the scoreboard in favor of Brock. Lipari locks up double overs, trying to go big, Brock is comfortable here though and tries an inside trip of his own. They go out of bounds, no score. Thirty-five seconds to go. Lipari with overs, Brock unders. Lipari knows he needs more than two. Brock runs for the final 12 seconds, and it's a 9-6 victory for Brock and the Cowboys.

149 Pounds

#5 Kaden Gfeller (Oklahoma State) vs. #2 Anthony Ashnault (Rutgers)

First period: Gfeller shoots almost immediately and gets a leg up in the air. After some dancing, Gfeller finishes for two and the lead. A caution on Gfeller gives the RU fans something to cheer about, although perhaps sarcastically. Ashnault stands and is out after 19 seconds underneath. Ashnault works a two on one, Gfeller almost has a go behind but Ashanualt scrambles and turns it back into his advantage eventually covering for two and the lead, 3-2. Ashnault is dangerous on top by a standing granby by Gfeller gives the Cowboy a reversal and the lead again, 4-3, much to the delight of the OK State bench. Sit and escape for Ashnault ties it, RT at 18 seconds for Gfeller. And we go to the second score tied.

Second period: Gfeller chooses down. The larger Ashnault throws in a leg and erases riding time advantage. Gfeller stands and escapes for the lead once more. Ashnault has 20 seconds of RT. Ankle pick for Ashnault lands, but Gfeller kicks out of it. The next ankle pick through is ever cleaner and Ashnault finishes for two and the lead. It's 6-5. Gfeller scrambles and almost has a reversal but they go out of bounds just before time runs out. He ties the score but RT is now at 1:02 for Ashnault.

Third period: Ashnault picks bottom. He escapes in seven seconds, takes a 7-6 lead and his RT advantage goes under a minute to 55.2. We enter the final 60 seconds of the match. Ashnault hits a sweep single and methodically works to collect two. It's 9-6 now. A mat return gets the crowd animated. Gfeller escapes but is down two with RT about to be locked up for Ashnault. Ashnault also has no stall calls, until the final seven seconds that is. Gfeller chases, but Ashanault defends and wins by the final score of 10-7, giving Rutgers their first team points of the day.

Before getting his hand raised, Ashnault does some pistol firers in the air, which Gfeller does not appreciate. He responds by giving Ashnault a two-handed shove and both wrestlers have to be separated. A team point is deducted from both teams.

157 Pounds

Jonce Blaylock (Oklahoma State) vs. #15 John Van Brill (Rutgers)

First period: Blaylock threatens first but Van Brill likes to live dangerously and defends by doing the splits. They continues to scramble on the edge and no points are awarded and we get a neutral restart. Now Van Brill in on a single leg. Still no score. Ten seconds to finish. And Van Brill gets it barely in time. Both wrestlers have similar builds. Very lanky. Lot of lank on the mat right now.

Second period: Van Brill with a clack back and rolls Blaylock over his back. Rutgers coaches think he held him there long enough for two swipes, but he doesn't get the call. Blaylock works to his feet and gets the escape. JVB with 46.2 of RT. No scores for the rest of the period.

Third period: Van Brill gets a turn underneath. He goes to a quadpod, Blaylock looking to chop him down, now he drops to a leg, has it in the air. Jonce walks Van Brill out of bounds and gets hit for stalling. Van Brill is out for an escape and it's 4-3 so I must have missed a reversal or takedown for Blaylock. Sorry folks, lot of distractions here in the RAC today. It is 4-3 JVB in short time, RT not a factor. And Van Brill gets it down, consecutive wins for the Scarlet Knights. We are going to intermission and will resume in 12 minutes!

Team Scores

Ah yes, I need to keep track of that as well! It's 10-5, Cowboys over Knights. Would be 11-6 without the extracurriculars at 149-pounds.

165 Pounds

Andrew Shomers (Oklahoma State) vs. Stephan Glasgow (Rutgers)

First period: We return to action with Shomers and Glasgow and many fans still waiting in the lines for the men's room. Glagow with a shrug attack then sends Shomers out of reach. Shomers returns to a hesitant Glasgow and puts him in a front headlock, but nothing comes of it and we're back in neutral. Big snap downs from Glasgow but no scores. Shomers pushes Glasgow out of bounds in collar ties and Glasgow picks up a stall warning. Time runs out and theres no scores.

Second period: Glasgow chooses neutral. A shrug right off the whistle works for Glasgow this time and he gets behind Shomers. A big mat return gives Glasgow a two-point lead, but Shomers cuts it to one with a quick escape. A single leg from Shomers has Glasgow in danger but Glasgow scrambles and spins the opposite way, eventually muscling his way to a two-point takedown. Another escape from Shomers makes it 4-2, RT not a factor. Second period expires same score.

Third period: Shomer chooses down and will try to trim the lead back down to one. He does so, making it 4-3 in favor of Glasgow, who has just 28 seconds of riding time. 90 seconds left in regulation as Glasgow gets a single leg, but Shomers wrestles out of it. 1:15 now after a restart. Low ankle shot connects for Shomers and he gets two and a 5-4 lead with under a minute now. Shomers still on top but gets warned for stalling and we get a restart, Shomers still on top and leading 5-4, RT still not a factor. Shomers trying to hold on with the ride out, Glasgow floating his hips, trying to heist out and cover for two. Glagow switches back the other way. It's close, but time runs out. Rutgers wants a review and they'll get it. I don't think Glasgow had control though, and the officials agree. Shomers tops Glasgow 5-4.

OK State 13, Rutgers 5

174 Pounds

#5 Joe Smith (Oklahoma State) vs.  Joe Grello (Rutgers)

First period: Smith with the snap down, into a double and finishes for two. Riding tough on Grello. Grello granbys and escapes to make it 2-1. A smooth snap (or perhaps a shuck?) and Smith gets two more. Smith attacking in all directions at once but Grello manages to fend him off for now. Grello has a front head lock in short time. Time expires in the first.

Second period: Smith chooses down. A stand attempt is thwarted but not the second attempt. It's 5-2 now in favor of Smith. Grello gets in on a single and has Smith hopping. He tries to work his way up and he converts to cut the lead to one point. Smith with the escape to make it a 6-4 match, RT not a factor. No more scores when the buzzer sounds.

Third period: Grello chooses down. Grello stands and is out quickly to make it 6-5, RT not a factor. A solid ankle pick gives Smith a clean finish and the lead. Smith gets riding time up over a minute and takes command of the match. Exactly 60 seconds left in regulation, Smith leading 8-5. Grello escapes to make it a two-point match but Smith has 1:16 of RT. Thirty seconds to go. Coach Pritzlaff telling Grello to go now but it's too late to stop RT from being locked. And too late now for the comeback. Smith wins 9-6.

OK State 16, Rutgers 5

184 Pounds

#11 Jacobe Smith (Oklahoma State) vs. Willie Scott (Rutgers)

First period: Scott comes right at the Cowboy All-American, getting a single leg and eventually scrambling for the takedown. He's in a crab ride about a minute into the match. Scott with a leg in but Smith grabs hold of it, elevates and hip heists for a reversal. Scott bellied out on the mat with a minute left in the first. Scott doesn't get far off his bellow for the next minute but no stall warning is issued.

Second period: Jacobe chooses down as we start the second tied up 2-2. Scott back in a crab ride, now Smith comes up and getting a whizzer. Smith faces for one, then looks for the cow catcher. Scott gives up two and potentially more. Jacobe slowly improving his position, tucking that far shoulder under and now getting swipes. Smith has him in danger for about 90 seconds, but somehow Scott gets to his belly and the crowd rewards him with a loud cheer. Period expires and Scott needs injury time. I'm betting he will need a lot of ice on his neck and shoulder when this match is over as well. Score is 9-2 in favor of Jacobe, who also has 91 seconds of RT.

Third period: Scott will continue and Smith will choose bottom. Scott has a tight waist ride but lets his hips drop and Jacobe looks to take advantage again. But Jacobe gets out of position and Scott picks up two nearfall. Finally, Smith finishes his reversal to make it 11-4 and locks in a far side cradle. Scott won't turn over so Jacobe cuts him to make it 11-5. An upper body tango and Jacobe nearly gets a chin whip hip toss but no back points are forthcoming. Time runs out and it's a 14-5 lead after the takedown and RT point is awarded.

OK State 20, Rutgers 5

197 Pounds

#13 Dakota Geer (Oklahoma State) vs. Matthew Correnti (Rutgers)

First period: Geer in on a low single early, but Correnti defends and picks up a takedown via merkle. A mat return and tilt gets Correnti two non-consecutive single swipes but no nearfall points, much to the dismay of the Rutgers fans. An escape after 57 seconds of riding makes it 2-1. Time runs out in the first after several attacks but no more scores.

Second period: Geer chooses down. RT goes up to 1:08 before Geer can escape. The score is knotted 2-2. A tactical second period sees a few threats but no scores as we'll go to the third Correnti still with 1:08 of RT.

Third period: With the RT clock being what it is, Correnti chooses neutral. No stall warnings yet. Correnti with a shot that goes nowhere but it does give fans an excuse to call for stalling. Now a shot by Geer and this lands, he overs for two, works RT down and spoils the gamble by Correnti. Geer will win by the score of 4-2.

OK State 23, Rutgers 5

285 Pounds

#3 Derek White (Oklahoma State) vs. Christian Colucci (Rutgers)

First period: Final match of the day! Not a lot of action, but Colucci gets poked in the eye and fans very loudly ask why that was not called hands to the face. Arm drag by White doesn't land and we're into the final minute of the first period. White gets a go behind in short time to make it 2-0 and rides out the period.

Second period: White may have been an undersized heavyweight when he first bulked up from 197, but he is a full-size one now. White weighed in at 247, seven pounds more than Colucci. White starts the second on bottom. White eventually escapes with over a minute left in the second. He leads 3-0, riding time not a factor. Period ends the same way.

Third period: Colucci chooses bottom for the final period of the dual meet. White breaks Colucci down and doesn't let him back up to his bases for very long. Riding time crawls up over a minute as Colucci is broken down flat. White cut him with 35 seconds on the board, lead 3-1 with RT just about locked up. Colucci then picks up a hands to the face call to a smattering of sarcastic clasps. A snap down as time runs out almost scores but no points are awarded. White wins 4-2.

FINAL SCORE: OK State 26, Rutgers 5

Oklahoma State won eight out of 10 matches, but I have a feeling coach John Smith will be disappointed by the closeness of many of them. Plenty of positives and negative takeaways from both teams. I'm sure both coaches will have lots of say about it in the post-match interviews.

Also sounds like final attendance numbers were around 7,540. Not quite the 9,000 we that we thought might have been possible, but a very large crowd nonetheless. Rutgers put over 16,000 in the football stadium a couple years ago, but this may have been the most inside the RAC for a wrestling match.

So that was lots of fun, despite the unfortunate ending to the much-hyped Fix-Suriano bout. Enjoy the subsequent discussions, rules-based and otherwise, and thanks for following along despite the typos. See you next time, wonderful and intelligent wrestling fans!
