This will be the dual season debut for OSU, while Drexel went 2-0, topping SIUE and West Liberty, at the Dragon Duals.
Here are six reasons you should tune in.
1. Season debuts from Joe Smith and Kaden Gfeller
Most of the Cowboys got their season started off last weekend at the OCU Open. Two projected starters in #6 Joe Smith (174) and #10 Kaden Gfeller (141), did not compete, however. Both wrestlers are moving weights to what most believe will be a better fit. Smith is moving up from 165 and Gfellar down from 149. Assuming they compete, it will be interesting to see how well they look at the new weights.
2. Official career debut of Reece Witcraft
According to Pistols Firing’s Seth Duckworth on Twitter, OSU will be pulling freshman Reece Witcraft’s redshirt and putting him into the lineup at 133.
#24 on the Class of 2019 Big Board, Witcraft isn’t a bad option for the Cowboys. In addition to a pair of Oklahoma state titles and a Fargo title, Witcraft won the 2018 Ironman title at 126 lbs over former Blair Academy and current Penn wrestler Michael Colaiocco.
Witcraft unofficially started his college career while wrestling unattached last weekend at the OCU Open. He put up 50 points while going 3-0 with a major, a decision, and a pin. Yeah . . . he’s going to be somebody you’re going to want to watch.
3. Return of Boo
Cowboy fans should be optimistic seeing that #8 Boo Lewallen’s shoulder was able to hold up for four matches last weekend. When Boo is fully healthy and wrestling his best, he is as good as anyone in the country at 149 lbs.
4. Picc = points
Speaking of as good as anyone in the country when wrestling their best, remember Nick Piccininni? The two-time All-American who pinned Spencer Lee last year and went undefeated in the regular season with 14 tech falls? Yeah, that Nick Piccininni. Picc puts points on the board and is incredibly fun to watch.
5. Lineup answers from the Cowboys
The Cowboys still have some question marks at the final three weights of their lineup. At 184, it’s assumed that returning All-American Dakota Geer will hold down the spot. However, redshirt-freshman Anthony Montalvo and Geer opted not to wrestle in the finals against at OCU Open.
There have been talks of Montalvo possibly bumping up to 197. Alex Kauffman, a two-time JUCO All-American transfer who is up from 184 lbs, beat teammate Bear Hughes 4-3 to win the OCU title at 184 lbs.
Heavyweight is undoubtedly the thinnest weight for the Cowboys. They only have two listed on the roster. Cornelius Putnam didn’t wrestle at the OCU Open and Austin Harris medical forfeited after one match. If both wrestlers are unable to compete, OSU might be forced to bump up a 197-pounder.
6. A top-25 matchup at 165 lbs
165 will be one of the few weights where Drexel is favored on paper. #12 Ebed Jarrell will take on #25 Travis Wittlake. This will be a good test to see exactly where Wittlake is at. Jarrell is a redshirt-senior and NCAA qualifier, but Wittlake is a good prospect who could make some noise at 165 this year.
