Each week we try to put together a comprehensive list of every upset that happened over the weekend. If you saw an upset that didn't make this list, we'd love to know about it. Email david.bray@flosports.tv to report upsets that we missed.
As we've come to expect, this weekend was packed with upsets that will have big impacts on this season's rankings. Before diving into the complete list of this week's upsets, check out some of the landscape shifting results we saw in week 4:
Trent Hidlay Takes Out #2 & #3
NC State wrestled both Cornell and Binghamton this Saturday. This gave Wolfpack freshman Trent Hidlay the chance to take on #3 Ben Darmstadt and #2 Louie DePrez in back-to-back matches. Hidlay came out on top in two razor-thin contests. The second was live on FloWrestling, and you can watch it above. While Hidlay was a high-profile freshman, these wins will certainly propel him toward the top of the NCAA rankings and put him even higher on people's radars.
David Carr Over #2 Kaleb Young
Like Trent Hidlay above, David Carr is a freshman who wrestling fans have been clamoring for since last season. He won a Junior World gold medal over the summer, and everyone has been curious to see how his age level success would translate at the NCAA level.
He had the first big test of his young career on Sunday when he took on second-ranked Kaleb Young of Iowa. While many Iowa State fans favored Carr in the matchup, he still had to prove that he was ready to take out a proven All-American. Carr did just that in one of the weekend's most entertaining matches.
Unranked Orndorff Upends #4 Sloan
In one of the biggest numerical upsets of the weekend, unranked Tanner Orndorff surprised South Dakota State's fourth-ranked Tanner Sloan. The Jackrabbit had an impressive true freshman year last year which had him near the top of the field at 197. But Utah Valley's Orndorff was ready. He needed third-period heroics to get the win. Check it out here:
Brands Makes Case for Starting Spot With Win Over #5 Colbray
Nelson Brands notched his second-ranked win in as many weeks, this time beating a top-five opponent in Iowa State's Sammy Colbray. Before this dual meet, many considered Brands to be a backup at 184 to #11 Cash Wilcke. Now the question is how Iowa can leave him out of the lineup.
The match itself was exciting. Brands, clearly giving up substantial size, had what it took in an overtime contest with plenty of late drama. It's a must-watch match.
#20 Purinton over #3 Thomsen in a Wild One
Nebraska's Collin Purinton came into his match against #3 Max Thomsen as a major underdog, having lost an 11-4 decision to Thomsen a season ago. That didn't stop Purinton from knocking off the UNI All-American in an overtime match that played a major role in Nebrada's win against the third-ranked Panthers.
Purinton is a wrestler who has been looking for a signature win like this throughout his career. Now he has one. Take a look at that action-packed match here:
