Blair Is Headed To The Gut Check

The Gut Check got a whole lot tougher this year with the addition of Blair Academy. With 11 wrestlers ranked currently, including P4P #11 Shayne Van Ness, Blair is one of the top high school teams in the country.

In its six previous years, The Gut Check has been one of the top high school tournaments in the nation. 80 teams from all over the western timezone and even Canada come to compete.

From its humble beginnings as a one-day tournament with 16-man brackets to its current incarnation that will feature 64-man brackets wrestled over two days, the Gut Check continues to grow by leaps and bounds. The brackets are getting deeper, too. The addition of a powerhouse like Blair will make any tournament elite; now throw in three of the five Washington state team group champions from last season, plus over a dozen other state-placing teams, and a mix Northwest high school powers nearby states, and you've got one of the premier events of the season.

Some of the best action from last year's Gut Check includes the 106-pound final between Fargo All-Americans Oscar Alvarez and Horacio Godinez came down to an OT takedown.

And some more good news: Both Granger High School and Toppenish High School are back again this year!

This year's 106 final has the potential to be fun again with Cadet World champion Marc-Anthony McGowan and Fargo runner-up Mitchell Neiner both expected to be in the mix.

Watch McGowan win his World team spot and Neiner tech his way into the Fargo finals below.
