Ninth-ranked heavyweight Chase Singletary’s season is likely over, according to Ohio State head coach Tom Ryan, who said the Buckeyes would seek an additional year of eligibility for the redshirt sophomore.

Ryan said an injury sustained during the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational last month “was bigger than we originally thought” and that Gary Traub would get the nod versus Arizona State Monday night.

“'Gastank Gary' has really been a lightning rod for the team from an energy standpoint, so Gary Traub will definitely go at heavyweight,” Ryan told reporters Friday at the Jennings Wrestling Facility. “At this point, Gary is doing so well – he's 18-1 – right now at heavyweight, so we're leaning toward medicalling [sic] Chase. It's that bad; he's missed enough training and it looks like it's going to linger on another four to six weeks.”

Singletary wrestled in just three matches in 2019 before he was sidelined in Sin City, going 3-0 in those bouts with one win over a ranked opponent in Pitt’s Demetrius Thomas. He missed early time for the Buckeyes while competing for Team USA at the U23 World Freestyle Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Ohio State faces the Sun Devils Monday night from Covelli Center in what should be the Buckeyes’ toughest home dual of the season.
