Week 11 of NCAA wrestling featured a huge slate of high-level duals that will give us a lot to process for the following week. Kyle Bratke has compiled all of the dual meet results from the week, and you'll especially want to keep an eye on the upsets article that will come on on Monday afternoon as the landscape has shifted at several weight classes, but for now, here are a few of the biggest stories coming out of the weekend.
Iowa 20-0 Against Indiana and Purdue
At this point, we know Iowa is good. They've been the #1-ranked team for the last seven weeks of the season, but even for a top team, their dominance this weekend was impressive.
Iowa traveled to the state of Indiana to take on the Indiana Hoosiers on Friday night and the Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday afternoon. The Hawkeyes were undefeated in both duals with nine bonus-point wins.
One of the biggest focal points of the weekend was Iowa true freshman Abe Assad at 184. He took over the starting spot for the Hawks after making it to the finals at the 2019 Midlands Championships, but this was the first time his redshirt was officially removed. Assad was 2-0 on the weekend winning 6-2 over Indiana's Jake Hinz and 5-2 over Purdue's Max Lyon.
Iowa's shutout of #6 Purdue was particularly impressive. In that dual, Spencer Lee teched #7 Devin Schroder, Kaleb Young got his second win of the season over #6 Kendall Coleman, Michael Kemerer beat #4 Dylan Lydy 8-4, and Jacob Warner upset #2 Christian Brunner 8-2. These results only build on the incredible season Iowa has been putting together.
Penn State Wins 2 as New Lineup Takes Shape
Penn State's recent injury troubles have been well-documented. Those problems persisted this weekend but Penn State persisted for two dual meet wins this weekend. On Friday night, Illinois stormed out to a lead against the Nittany Lions taking four of the first six bouts from a Penn State squad that was missing Roman Bravo Young, Brady Berge, and Vincenzo Joseph.
Penn State rallied, earning four wins from Mark Hall, Aaron Brooks, Shakur Rasheed, and Seth Nevills. Rasheed and Nevills were taking over their new spots in the lineup.
On Sunday, Penn State got a win over Northwestern, this time without the help of Brady Berge at 157 or Aaron Brooks at 184. One of the biggest results in this bout was unranked Lucas Davison's win over Penn State All-American Shakur Rasheed.
It is a bit challenging to get a full picture of where Penn State stands as many of their starters have missed time, but they still offer a formidable lineup.
South Dakota State Takes Out Wyoming and #14 UNI
Damion Hahn's SDSU Jackrabbits had a fantastic weekend with wins over #14 UNI on Friday night and Wyoming on Sunday. The Jackrabbits entered the weekend without much fanfare but used a series of upsets to earn two big wins.
One big SDSU upset came on Friday night at 125 when Danny Vega started the dual with a 10-6 win over #18 Jacob Schwarm. A few matches later at 149, #17 Henry Pohlmeyer took out #7 Max Thomsen. Despite the lower ranking, Pohlmeyer is now 3-0 against Thomsen in their college careers.
While SDSU used upsets to take out UNI on Friday, they used bonus points to get the job done against Wyoming on Sunday. Danny Vega earned a technical fall at 125 over Jacob Svihel. Those two bonus points were more than the one Cole Moody earned for his major decision at 165. Since the teams won five matches apiece, that was enough for SDSU to finish the weekend with two wins and demonstrate that they're headed in the right direction.
Tristan Moran Makes Major Move at 141
Wisconsin's Tristan Moran has been considered an All-American contender since transferring from Oklahoma State to Wisconsin before the 2018-19 season, but after one of the best weekends of his career, he has further proved that he belongs in All-American conversations.
In Friday night's dual against Minnesota, Moran edged #2 McKee 7-6 for his first upset of the weekend. Moran had been 1-1 against McKee heading into that match and now has the lead in the series.
On Sunday, Wisconsin hosted Nebraska which meant that Moran saw #6 Chad Red. These two had yet to meet before this dual. Red came out to an early lead, but Moran turned Red twice to secure the 9-4 win. Moran is now 15-2 on the year with high expectations for March.
Lucas Davison Over #2 Brunner and AA Rasheed
Northwestern's Lucas Davison entered the season with the eyes of many an NCAA fan upon him after his Junior World silver medal performance this summer in Tallin, Estonia. While he's had a fine freshman season to this point, he might not have lived up to Northwestern fans' expectations. Until this weekend.
On Friday night, Northwestern squared off against #6 Purdue which put Davison head-to-head against #2 Christian Brunner. Davison took Brunner to overtime before earning a controversial sudden-victory takedown for the win.
On Sunday, Davison had another impressive performance in a dual against Penn State as he took out All-American Shakur Rasheed 7-5. Davison showed off his late-match offensive prowess to come from behind.
