Feb. 16 | 3 PM ET

After West Virginia takes on Northern Iowa on Friday night and then Iowa State on Saturday night, the Panthers are traveling to Ames to take on the Cyclones.

Projected Lineups

125: #12 Jay Schwarm (UNI) vs #8 Alex Mackall (Iowa State)

133: #17 Jack Skudlarczyk (UNI) vs #16 Todd Small (Iowa State)

141: #14 Michael Blockhus (UNI) vs #8 Ian Parker (Iowa State)

149: #11 Max Thomsen (UNI) vs #8 Jarrett Degen (Iowa State)

157: Paden Moore (UNI) / Keaton Geerts (UNI) vs #3 David Carr (Iowa State)

165: Austin Yant (UNI) vs Chase Straw (Iowa State)

174: #5 Bryce Steiert (UNI) vs #19 Sammy Colbray (Iowa State)

184: #4 Taylor Lujan (UNI) vs #23 Marcus Coleman (Iowa State)

197: Isaiah Patton (UNI) / Noah Glaser (UNI) vs Joel Shapiro (Iowa State)

285: #13 Carter Isley (UNI) vs #12 Gannon Gremmel (Iowa State)

125: #12 Jay Schwarm (UNI) vs #8 Alex Mackall (Iowa State)

These two split matches last year. Schwarm won the first meeting in the dual 6-3, and then Mackall won at Big 12s 8-5. However, in their most recent meeting at the Cyclone Open earlier this season, Mackall teched Schwarm 20-4. Schwarm chose bottom in the third and gave up three sets of four-point nearfall.

133: #17 Jack Skudlarczyk (UNI) vs #16 Todd Small (Iowa State)

This is the first of several toss-up matches in this dual. These two did wrestle once last season with Small winning 6-2. However, Skudlarczyk rode Small for the entire second and third periods, and has improved quite a bit since last year. Just a couple of weeks ago, Skuds beat Reece Witcraft, who then went and beat Small the very next day. So take last year’s result into consideration, but I wouldn’t place any bets based on that result alone.

141: #14 Michael Blockhus (UNI) vs #8 Ian Parker (Iowa State)

This match should be tightly contested. Michael Blockhus is having a solid freshman season and Ian Parker has pushed himself into the All-American conversation after just qualifying last year.

149: #11 Max Thomsen (UNI) vs #8 Jarrett Degen (Iowa State)

Another match that should be closely contested and could be very important for the outcome of this dual. A big question here is Degen’s health. With Thomsen being 4-0 against Degen all-time, he’s going to have an advantage going in against a 100 percent healthy Degen. If Degen’s not 100 percent, that advantage will only become larger.

Now, despite having a large shoulder brace on, Degen looked good in his return against Greg Gaxiola, and the advantage Thomsen holds over Degen isn’t large. In fact, Degen has been ranked higher than Thomsen all season, but it seems Thomsen has always just had Degen’s number. Their past matches’ final scores: 7-5, 11-5, 7-5, and 12-7.

Thomsen’s going to shoot his single and dump/carry. Degen’s going to be working his two-on-one and trying to out scramble Thomsen. It’s just a matter of who can execute their plan better.

157: Paden Moore (UNI) / Keaton Geerts (UNI) vs #3 David Carr (Iowa State)

David Carr is going to be a heavy heavy favorite no matter who UNI sends out. That is, if he’s wrestling.

The past two duals, redshirt freshman Grant Stotts has wrestled in place of Carr. If Stotts wrestles, this weight turns into a toss-up. Stotts beat Geerts 3-2 at the UNI Open in November, but Geerts showed how good he can be when he beat Wyatt Sheets. Moore and Stotts have never wrestled.

165: Austin Yant (UNI) vs Chase Straw (Iowa State)

One of several all-Iowa native matchups that will take place Sunday afternoon. Straw, a national qualifier last year, will be the favorite on his senior night in Ames. Yant, a sophomore with a 12-10 record, is tough, but so is Straw. This one will be a fight.

174: #5 Bryce Steiert (UNI) vs #19 Sammy Colbray (Iowa State)

Both of these guys are in different weight classes than a year ago: Steiert up from 165 and Colbray down from 184. Despite the size advantage Colbary may or may not have, Steiert will be the favorite. The transitive property isn’t always the best way to measure how two wrestlers will do against each other, but I can’t get the visual image of Bryce Steiert majoring Joe Smith and then Smith beating Colbary 5-2 the very next day out of my head.

184: #4 Taylor Lujan (UNI) vs #23 Marcus Coleman (Iowa State)

With both of these wrestlers competing their entire careers up until this season (midseason for Coleman) at 174, they have already wrestled four times. And a fun little tidbit, Lujan has won all four: one by decision, one by major, one by tech fall, and one by pin

197: Isaiah Patton (UNI) / Noah Glaser (UNI) vs Joel Shapiro (Iowa State)

Noah Glaser had been taking the place of injured Jacob Holschlag, but senior Isaiah Patton stepped in for the Panthers in their last dual against Oklahoma. It is not clear at this time who will be wrestling. Either way, Shapiro will be a slight favorite. Shapiro, a two-time state champion for West Des Moines Valley and a Fargo runner-up, has a decent single leg and is pretty good on top with the legs.

285: #13 Carter Isley (UNI) vs #12 Gannon Gremmel (Iowa State)

Another all-Iowa native match and another toss-up. These two have wrestled five times in their college career with Gremmel holding a 3-2 edge. They split in the 2018 season, they split last season, and Gremmel won 3-1 in the one time they have wrestled so far this season.

Your guess is good as mine who comes away with it this time.
