Outside of getting much-needed mat time in these unprecedented times, Senior Nationals didn’t hold much weight for the Olympic process like Senior Nationals and US Opens of the past. That was until USA Wrestling announced that Senior Nationals had been added to the criteria list for 2020 Olympic redshirt qualification.

Outside of getting much-needed mat time in these unprecedented times, Senior Nationals didn’t hold much weight for the Olympic process like Senior Nationals and US Opens of the past. That was until USA Wrestling announced that Senior Nationals had been added to the criteria list for 2020 Olympic redshirt qualification.

Some teams and individuals took full advantage of this. Nebraska brought almost their entire team and five wrestlers earned Olympic redshirts across both freestyle and Greco. Take a look at the full list of athletes who earned themselves Olympic redshirts below. 

Freestyle

Dylan Ragusin, Michigan - 2nd place 57 kg

Sam Latona, Virginia Tech - 6th place 57 kg

Jakob Comacho, NC State - 7th place 57 kg

Andrew Alirez, Northern Colorado - 1st place 65 kg

Yahya Thomas, Northwestern - 4th place 65 kg

Hayden Hidlay, NC State - 3rd place 74 kg

Danny Braunagel, Illinois - 7th place 74 kg

Rocky Elam, Missouri - 5th place 86 kg

Eric Schultz, Nebraska - 5th place 97 kg

Trent Hillger, Wisconsin - 4th place at 125 kg

Christian Lance, Nebraska - 7th place at 125 kg

Athletes Already Qualified

If there is a Junior World Championships, that will be the last chance for an athlete to qualify. An announcement from UWW is expected this week. Let’s take a look at every criteria. There are six that qualify an athlete, but they only need to meet one.  

  1. Past National Team member (top three from the World or Olympic Team Trials)

  2. Top eight at the April 2019 Senior US Open

  3. Top eight at the December 2019 Senior US Nationals Olympic Trials Qualifier

  4. Top eight at the October 2020 Senior US Nationals

  5. Top three at the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championships or NCAA Champion from a previous year AND top two from the 2019 U23 World Team Trials (must accomplish both)

  6. Previous Cadet, Junior, U23, World Medalist
