Good evening from Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It’s been 636 days since Iowa last wrestled in front of its home crowd, but we’ll have a full house tonight with more than 14,000 expected to be on hand for the season opener for both squads. 

It’s a makeshift lineup for the Hawkeyes without Spencer Lee, Max Murin, Michael Kemerer and Jacob Warner. Instead, Jesse Ybarra, Cobe Siebrect, Nelson Brands and Zach Glazier are expected to get the nod at 125, 149, 174 and 197, respectively. U23 World Team member Myles Wilson is listed as the starter for the Hawkeyes at 184 and Abe Assad will wrestle in the lone extra match on tonight’s card. 

Iowa coach Tom Brands dropped some news during his pre-dual interview with Hawkeye play-by-play guy Steven Grace. Princeton All-American Patrick Glory is on the start list, but Brands said the Hawkeyes will be receiving a forfeit at 125.

184 Extra Match — Abe Assad (Iowa) pinned Forrest Belli (Princeton) 4:38

First period: Assad digging underhooks, pulls Belli down into a front headlock, Assad single, finishes for two. Belli up to his feet and out. Head-outside shot by Assad, he finishes for another takedown. Belli gets up to his feet and escapes. Assad straight-on shot, Belli re-attack, Assad spins around for another takedown. Belli escapes to make it 6-3. Another takedown for Assad and he rides out Belli to take an 8-3 lead into the second with 1:21 of riding time. 

Second period: Assad starts down to begin the second. Belli cuts the riding time down to 59 seconds and kicks Assad out. Another go-behind takedown for Assad makes it 11-3. Belli escape. Duck attempt by Belli and Assad crunches him to his back and settles in for the fall in 4:38. 

125 — Jesse Ybarra (Iowa) won by forfeit

133 —#3 Austin DeSanto (Iowa) tech. fall Nick Masters (Princeton) 22-6 in 4:30

First period: DeSanto gets in off the opening whistle and scores 12 seconds into the match. Big match return for DeSanto. Masters escape. DeSanto front-headlock, knee tap for two. Masters is out and in on a leg after the escape. DeSanto squares up and comes close to whipping Masters over but can’t score. Masters is in deep again, but it gets stalemated. Carry attempt by DeSanto and he takes Masters to his back for four backs to extend his lead to 10-2. He’ll take the eight-point lead into the second with 1:09 of riding time. 

Second period: masters escapes to start the second and DeSanto is in right away for another takedown. He cuts Masters loose and goes feet-to-back for a two-point near-fall and takes Masters to his back again for two more. Masters escapes to make it 16-5 and DeSanto is back in again for two more. DeSanto goes optional escap and hits another carry for two and two backs to end it. 

141 — #3 Jaydin Eierman (Iowa) major dec. Jacob Mann (Princeton) 15-7

First period: Eierman gets his first full Carver experience as a Hawkeye win fans in the stands. Scoreless through the opening minute with a couple opportunities on the edge that Eierman couldn’t cash in. Mann gets warned for stalling. Shot by Mann with Eierman trying to sit the corner. Eierman scoots around behind for two. Mann to his feet for an escape and Eierman hits a slide-by for two more and he finishes the period on top to take a 4-1 lead with :59 RT into the second. 

Second period: Mann starts down to begin the second and scores a quick escape before getting in on a leg. Eierman counters for two to push his lead to 6-2. Mann in again, but Eierman is putting on a counter-offense clinic. He tacks on another takedown and puts in the boots and has Mann stretched out underneath. That’ll do it for the second. Eierman takes an 8-3 lead into the third with 2:27 RT. 

Third period: Eierman starts down and gets to his feet and spins around for a reversal and cuts Mann loose. Eierman adds another takedown on the edge to push his lead into bonus territory. He goes optional with 1:14 left. Mann in on a head-inside single, but Eierman sits the corner again, sticks in a leg and covers for another takedown. Mann scores a reversal just before the horn, but Eierman wins 15-7 with 3:21 RT. 

149 — Cobe Siebrecht (Iowa) tech. fall Josh Breeding (Princeton) 16-1 in 2:35

First period: Siebrecht comes out hard early with a shot attempt and puts Breeding in danger before covering for two. Siebrecht goes to work on top and tilts Breeding for a four count. Another tilt for Siebrecht for four more. And four more on yet another tilt. Breeding escapes and Siebrecht is in right away for another takedown to end it. 

157 — #7 Quincy Monday (Princeton) dec. #6 Kaleb Young (Iowa) 9-5

First period: The main event of the night. These two have split matches in the two most-recent duals between the Hawkeyes and Tigers with Young winning in 2018 and Monday taking the 2019 bout. Great action with an early exchange that ends in a stalemate. Monday fires off a double after the restart and scores. Monday accumulates 27 seconds of RT before Young escapes. Monday takes a 2-1 lead into the second. 

Second period: Monday starts down to begin the second and hits a switch for a reversal. Young gets to his feet and escapes. Monday is back in on a single that Young is trying to fight off, but Monday finishes it for two. Young escapes quickly to make it 6-3. Monday takes a 6-3 lead into the third with :50 RT. 

Third period: Young starts down to begin the third after a lengthy delay and discussion at the head table. Young escapes in 17 seconds, but Monday is in on him again with a quick shot and finish. Young’s escape makes it 8-5. Front-headlock by Young, but Monday clears out of it. Young dives in on a shot just before the horn, but Monday hurdles over him. That’ll do it. 

165 — #3 Alex Marinelli (Iowa) dec. Grant Cuomo (Princeton) 12-5

First period: Nice shot by Cuomo to get to Marinelli’s left leg and he collects the other for a takedown. Marinelli is up and out. Double by Marinelli for a takedown to go ahead. Marinelli is out front and looking for a turn. Cuomo comes out of a possible precarious situation and escapes to tie it up. It’s 3-3 at the end of 1. Marinelli has :25 RT. 

Second period: Marinelli starts down to begging the second and scores a quick reversal. Marinelli is looking for a whipover again, but Cuomo fights it off. Cuomo gets up to his feet and he’s out to cut the Marinelli lead to 5-4. Cuomo takes a shot from space and Marinelli runs behind him for a takedown. Marinelli takes a 7-4 lead with 1:51 RT into the third. 

Third period: Marinelli has been looking for something big on top. He’s fishing for a whipover again, but Cuomo isn’t having it. Cuomo escapes to make it 7-5. Go-behind takedown for Marinelli with :47 left. Marinelli cranks Cuomo over for two backs just before time expires. He’ll tack on the point for riding time and win 12-5. 

174 — Nelson Brands (Iowa) vs. Michael Squires (Princeton)

First period: Brands is down from 184 and his go-behind game is still strong. He spins behind Squires and lifts for a takedown. Squires gets up and out. Sweep single by Brands for two. Squires escape. Stall warning on Squires on the edge. Another sweep and finish by Brands. Brands leads 6-2 at the end of 1 with 1:05 RT. 

Second period: Quick escape by Brands to start the second. Squires gets in on a shot, but Brands fights it off and scrambles for another takedown to extend his lead to 9-2. Squires escape. Brands runs around the corner, lifts Squires and adds another takedown to push his lead into major territory. Brands leads 11-3 with 2:01 RT at the end of 2.

Third period: Squires escapes to start the third. Shot by Squires, but Brands gets his legs back, runs behind and lifts for two more. Brands kicks Squires out. Brands head-outside shot, Squires cuts the corner for two. Squires is looking for a cradle, but Brands reverses him. Squires escape makes it 15-8. Squires is trying to fend off a major with a late shot attempt, but Brands fights it off and almost adds another takedown before time expires. Brands wins 16-8. 

184 — Myles Wilson (Iowa) tech fall Forrest Belli (Princeton) 23-8 in 5:04

First period: Double duty tonight for Belli, who wrestled Abe Assad in the extra match before the dual. Lots of action early with a terrific flurry in the opening minute. Both guys looked like they might score at one point before Wilson scrambles for the first two. Belli escapes and Wilson gets in again for two more. Belli escapes to cut his deficit to 4-2. Wilson is on the attack again and his third takedown of the match makes it 6-2. 

Second period: Wilson escapes and spins around for two and cuts Belli loose. Wilson is back in on the legs again for two more. He takes Belli over for a two count to extend his lead to 13-3. Wilson cuts Belli loose. Belli shot off a restart and Wilson runs around him for two and releases him again. Low-double by Wilson for two more. It’s 17-5 at the end of 2 and Wilson has 3:01 RT. 

Third period: Belli starts down to begin the third and hits a switch for an escape. Wilson is playing catch and release. He scores three more takedowns to end it.  

197 — Luke Stout (Princeton) dec. Zach Glazier (Iowa) 4-0

First period: Not much happening in the first 90 seconds. Shot from space by Glazier, but Stout feels it coming. Scoreless at the end of 1. 

Second period: Stout starts down to begin the second and gets to his feet before Glazier returns him. Stout gets up again and out this time. Misdirection single by Stout, Glazier tries rolling him through, but Stout finishes and ends the period on top. He leads 3-0 with :19 RT at the end of 2. 

Third period: Glazier starts down to begin the third. Solid ride by Stout. He takes his RT over a minute before they go OB with 1:14 left. Glazier gets to his feet with :40 left, but Stout returns him and has his RT locked up. Stout rides out Glazier in the third to win 4-0 with 2:19 RT. 

285 — Jack Del Garbino (Princeton) pinned #3 Tony Cassioppi (Iowa) 2:07

First period: Single by Cassioppi that Del Garbino nearly wiggles out of before Cassioppi covers for two. Cassioppi is going to work on top and looking for a bar and he runs Del Garbino over, but Del Garbino rolls through and has Cassioppi on his back and in deep trouble on the edge. There’s the fall for Del Garbino. 

Iowa wins the dual 32-12.
