Every four years, the Olympic Team Trials attracts one of the greatest collections of active American wrestlers under one roof. Just how great will the 2024 Trials in State College be? Keep reading and we will tell you!

I would like to start off this article by saying that I hope Team USA goes 10 for 10 at Worlds and dominates the entire way and that USA Wrestling has become so good in the past handful of years that just making the team automatically makes you a medal threat at the World Championships. Look at how many medalists are sitting home this year. That being said, I’m trying to provide information to help fans set realistic expectations. At weights where I did not predict a gold medal, I’m not saying that wrestler isn’t capable, just looking at data including past results and international fields.

The road to the 70 kg US World Team spot runs through Zain Retherford. The 2022 World silver medalist is looking to secure his fourth senior World Team spot overall and his second consecutive spot at the weight. To do so, he'll need to win a best-of-three series against 2019 NCAA finalist Tyler Berger.

Zain Retherford (70 kg), Jordan Burroughs (79 kg), and David Taylor (86 kg) are in the semis while Helen Maroulis (57 kg), Tamyra Mensah-Stock (68 kg), and Amit Elor (72 kg) wrestle for gold medals. Men’s Freestyle at the World Championships will start Thursday morning in Belgrade, Serbia. Before the action kicks off, let’s take a look at each American’s path to the world finals!

With the chaos of COVID-19 and the Olympic Games’ postponement, it’s been three long years since wrestling had a typical World Championships. Thankfully, this year’s tournament promises plenty of intriguing storylines and ample opportunity for the American women to further prove themselves on the world stage. Don’t miss the women’s freestyle competition, which will take place from September 12-15.

My friend Jon Kozak wrote "2022 Senior Worlds College Fan Guide - Men's Freestyle" which is a similar piece of content that includes several of the same names. This list differs in that it includes a lot of Russian wrestlers who never attended college in the US and excludes wrestlers who were born and/or raised in a country and then moved to the US for school.

USA Wrestling is sending a powerful women’s lineup to Belgrade, Serbia, a team that includes six returning medalists, four of whom reached the podium last year in Oslo. U.S. women will try to improve on their silver medal finish as a team last year, but will have to overtake a Japanese program that seems to run away with the team race every year. The drama will play out beginning Monday and wrapping up Thursday.

The 2022 United States Senior World Team is different from how it was originally composed in the aftermath of the Final X Series. Three athletes – all of whom having been recent Olympians – will no longer be suiting up in Belgrade. In addition, the acting head coach is not the same guy who was seen taking pictures alongside the Final X victors back in June, nor was he around when the majority of this year’s World Teamers first began wrestling on the Senior level altogether.
