All times listed are local.
Friday, January 11:
Illinois -8.5 @ Michigan State, 7:00 PM | LIVE ON FLO
This dual has so interesting bouts. But wagering on it might require a leap of faith as Mikey Carr and Emery Parker have been out for quite a while. But 125 (Piotrowski-Foley), 157 (Barone-Tucker), 174 (James-Hughes), and 184 (Parker-Caffey) should make for an enjoyable dual.
Wisconsin -7.5 @ Rutgers | LIVE ON FLO
It's a big week for both teams as Wisconsin will go on to face Penn State while Rutgers will then host Oklahoma State.
The Badgers are probably favored at more weights, but there is bonus potential for the Knights and a few key upset spots that could swing in their favor. At 141, Peter Lipari looked good at Midlands. I think he can go with Moran. The other swing match is at 157 with Zander Wick and JVB.
Finally, the picture at 184 and 197 are a little cloudy. Gravina and Reinhardt is certainly a good match up but it will hinge on how healthy Gravina is. Breske looked good in his Badger and 197 debut at Midlands but the sample size if very limited.
125: #16 Connor Brown (Wisconsin) vs. Shane Metzler (Rutgers)
133: Jens Lantz (Wisconsin) vs. #2 Nick Suriano (Rutgers)
141: #16 Tristan Moran (Wisconsin) vs. Peter Lipari (Rutgers)
149: #13 Cole Martin (Wisconsin) vs. #2 Anthony Ashnault (Rutgers)
157: Zander Wick (Wisconsin) vs. John Van Brill (Rutgers)
165: #3 Evan Wick (Wisconsin) vs. Stephan Glasgow (Rutgers)
174: #10 Ryan Christensen (Wisconsin) vs. Joe Grello (Rutgers)
184: Mason Reinhardt (Wisconsin) vs. Nick Gravina (Rutgers)
197: Beau Breske (Wisconsin) vs. Matthew Correnti (Rutgers)
285: #9 Trent Hillger (Wisconsin) vs. Christian Colucci (Rutgers)
North Carolina +2.5 @ Princeton, 7:00 PM
#6-Austin O'Connor +3 vs. #1-Matt Kolodzik
Undefeated and #1, Matt Kolodzik has looked fantastic this year. Freshman O'Connor - already ranked 6th - has just two losses. One was to Mitch Finesilver (3-2) and the other to Micah Jordan (7-3) at CKLV.
While dominant, Kolodzik's scores against top guys have been relatively close. He has two 7-4 wins over Lugo, a 3-1 over Max Thomsen, and 5-2 vs. Pohlmeyer.
Penn State at Northwestern, 7:00 PM | LIVE ON FLO
#3-Ryan Deakin +8 vs. #1-Jason Nolf
Perhaps the most dominant wrestler in college against Deakin who is coming off his only loss of the year. While Berger beating Deakin may have taken a little luster off this matchup, the point spread puts it right back on.
Deakin has never been turned and has given up bonus once as a redshirt (to Sorenson) and once as a Freshman (to Zain). Both were by exactly 8pts.
Saturday, January 12:
Oklahoma State at Princeton, 1:00 PM
#12-Patrick Glory Pick Em #4-Nick Piccininni
True freshman Glory has already proven his mettle. He's undefeated to wrestlers not named Spencer Lee on the season. His biggest win was a tech over #14-Travis Piotrowski. But he hasn't faced anyone as seasoned as Piccininni, who is coming off a Scuffle title.
Picc is 18-0 with an 83% bonus rate this season. His two closest matches were both three-point margins (over Sean Russell and Rayvon Foley).
The interesting thing about this match up is that both are deadly on top. Who will get a turn?
#5-Kaden Gfeller +3.5 #1-Matthew Kolodzik
Huge weekend for both wrestlers as Kolodzik has two Top 6 guys. He'll wrestle Austin O'Connor the night before Gfeller, while Gfeller gets #2-Anthony Ashnault the next day.
Neither wrestler has a lost a bout this year.
Gfeller rose to #5 after winning the Scuffle over Mitch Finesilver. One would expect Kolodzik to get the job done, but can he win by 4? He has had four 3-pt. wins this season.
Northern Iowa +5.5 Nebraska, 7:00 PM | LIVE ON FLO
I love this dual and having a spread only makes it better. Projected lineups are below. UNI has been on fire, but Nebraska 1) has four clear favorites and 2) counters with studs that could pull upsets even where UNI's horses are.
Nebraska's favorites - 125, 157, 197, 285.
Awesome matchups - 141, 165, 174, 184
Best, most competitive dual on the docket this weekend.
125: Jay Schwarm (UNI) vs. #15 Zeke Moisey (Nebraska)
133: Jack Skudlarczyk (UNI) vs. Tucker Sjomeling (Nebraska)
141: #10 Josh Alber (UNI) vs. #20 Chad Red (Nebraska)
149: #9 Max Thomsen (UNI) vs. Jordan Shearer (Nebraska)
157: Patrick Schoenfelder (UNI) vs. #2 Tyler Berger (Nebraska)
165: #12 Bryce Steiert (UNI) vs. #6 Isaiah White (Nebraska)
174: #8 Taylor Lujan (UNI) vs. #9 Mikey Labriola (Nebraska)
184: #5 Drew Foster (UNI) vs. #4 Taylor Venz (Nebraska)
197: Tyrell Gordon (UNI) vs. #11 Eric Schultz (Nebraska)
285: Carter Isley (UNI) vs. #15 David Jensen (Nebraska)
Sunday, January 13:
Wisconsin at Penn State, 1:00 PM | LIVE ON FLO
#3-Evan Wick +2.5 #1-Vincenzo Joseph
Which Wick will we get? Evan looked like he was related to John. (I've wanted to use that line for so long.)
Evan had a fantastic NCAA run in which he took 3rd. This season he's beaten three Top 12 guys (Josh Shields, Bryce Steiert, and Isaiah White). He's put up a 'Wick-ed' bonus point rate as well. But then there's his loss to Alex Marinelli. Sure Marinelli is tough. He's awesome. But Wick didn't look like the himself in that match - which is the last bout he's wrestled.
On the other hand...
Cenzo is a beast, and 2-for-2 at the big dance. Though he's coming off two close decisions at the Scuffle. First was a 6-4 win over Shane Griffith and then in the finals a 6-5 win over Chance Marsteller.
Can Cenzo cover? Will Wick be fired up after his loss? It all makes for a must-watch bout.
Oklahoma State at Rutgers, 1:00 PM | LIVE ON FLO
#6-Daton Fix +1 #2-Nick Suriano
One of the great rivalries in high school moves to its next phase. Both uber recruits, Suriano and Fix gave us two memorable bouts while preps. And both are squarely in the NCAA title conversation this season. They'll meet for the first time in college on Sunday.
Although they rack up points on most opponents, I'm expecting a low scoring bout. Suriano is exceptional at maintaining position, and Daton's combination of staying busy and rubber-legging make him nearly un-takedown-able.
Actually, neither Daton nor Nick has given up an offensive point this year. Points will be at a premium. Surian wins by a point, you push. Daton wins by a point, a Daton bet wins. Suriano needs to win by two for you to cash.
#5-Kaden Gfeller +4.5 #2-Anthony Ashnault
Kaden's second test in as many days. #1-Kolodzik on Saturday then a quick drive north to hit Ashnault on Sunday. One would think that, win or lose vs. Kolodzik, G will have to maintain his composure the next day. Don't get too high if you win, don't get too low if you lose.
While Gfeller is an undefeated Scuffle Champ, he has had some close matches. Ashnault on the other hand has been en fuego after missing last season with injury.
The bulked up Ashnault has bonused in 11 of his 13 matches and scored 10 or more in all but one (in which he scored 8).
