Small Gym September isn't over yet, and today we are celebrating a gym in Tupelo, Mississippi, that has a big goal to help motivate them this season!

Extreme Athletics was originally owned by Mary and Joe Huckaby. In 2013, David and Sydney Schuch began coaching at the gym and were traveling from Memphis, Tennessee, to Saltillo, Mississippi, three days a week.

The gym developed into quite a successful program and began winning competitions such as UCA All Star Nationals and Cheersport. They even claimed a title at the 2017 D2 Summit.

In 2017 David and Sydney decided to purchase the gym and move it to Tupelo, Mississippi.

“Our biggest motivation in keeping the gym successful is that we are able to provide kids with amazing experiences they would not otherwise have,” said David and Sydney. “(We also want to provide) them with a safe place to be themselves and learning life lessons such as discipline and hard work!”

Extreme Athletics currently has five teams ranging from levels one to five.

The program has experienced some pretty big moments in the past few years.

“In 2015 we won our first national title with our senior 3 team,” said David and Sydney. “The following season we won 2 Cheersport national titles (Senior 3 and Senior 4 Coed) and in 2017 we won a D2 Summit title with our Senior 4 coed team.”

With all teams practicing twice a week, Extreme Athletics has had an amazing summer and they can’t wait to finally take the mat!

“We are very excited about all of our teams this season,” said David and Sydney. “But this season we are venturing into two new divisions in the international competition.”

Extreme Athletics has the main goal in mind this season and it’s something they have never done before.

“Our goal as a first-year worlds team is to get a bid,” said David and Sydney. “Anything over that will be icing on the cake.”

Choreography for the program took place in late August. Tyler Houchin put together the shell of the routine, while David and Sydney choreographed the stunts and pyramids.

You can expect exciting routines this season from Extreme Athletics along with growing athletes who better themselves from the beginning of the season, says David and Sydney. And maybe a few bids!

“We believe our program is special because we have such a diverse group of athletes who, each day, work harder to achieve their goals,” said David and Sydney. “We love having athletes from ages 3 to 22! It allows for our gym to be so close and allows our young athletes to have amazing role models who have the same passion as they do!”

"We have so much pride as a family at EXA! We are so thankful for all the athletes and parents who ride the rollercoaster of cheerleading with us through the highs and lows."

“We are a very intense and disciplined gym and we are honored the parents allow us to help instill that discipline and hard work in their athletes,” said David and Sydney. "We are so blessed with the opportunities and lifelong friends the gym has given us in Tupelo, Mississippi.”
