Seed vs placement data is often used to make an assessment of how good teams are at “peaking.” I was once included in this group, but the sample size is so small and so difficult to accurately measure that you won’t find me trying to make this link. That won’t stop me from handing tournament grades out based on performance vs expectations that come along with seeds.

Be honest, Drew Foster wasn’t the guy we thought would be standing on top of the podium at 184 this year. Even Drew didn’t think so, as he explains in his post tournament interview, he thought that football was the route for him to take after high school.

He outscored his opponents by a combined score of 23-5. He didn’t give up a single takedown the entire tournament, and when it was all said and done, he went home as the first NCAA champion in Virginia Tech history and the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the 2019 NCAA Championships.
