Thoughts From Behind The Mic: 2022 PIAA Championships

After 2021 we shouldn’t take normal day-to-day living for granted. It was great to be back in the Giant Center for a three-day tournament. The social aspect of the three-day reunion of former coaches, teammates, rivals, and friends was lost last year as the competitors were shuffled in and out of the Giant Center as quickly as possible to prevent mass interaction. It is what makes Pennsylvania wrestling so special. So many former competitors giving back to the sport. You can often find college level coaching staffs sitting in the corner at the PIAA State Championships. It's a special three days, and I was grateful it was back to normal. In this article I’m going to share a few stats and some thoughts I had as I sat behind the microphone matside in Hershey.

2022 College Fan Guide For PIAAs

Pennsylvania is probably the most heavily recruited high school wrestling state, and this year is no different. Despite being slightly down from the normal amount of commits, there is still 7 recruits in AA and 26 in AAA for a total of 33 D1 recruits are expected to be in Hershey. A reminder that this doesn't even include all of the many talented uncommitted wrestlers and underclassmen that will eventually end up as D1 wrestlers.

PIAA History: Freshmen Champions

Winning a PIAA State Wrestling Championship as a freshman is a rare feat. In fact, there have only been 48 freshmen win PIAA titles in the 84 years of the championships. However, there has been a recent surge in freshman champions. There are many factors at play, but the coaching available at the club level prior to high school has allowed more freshmen to be ready to compete at a high level than ever before. The past decade has produced more than twice the amount of freshman champions from any previous decade in history. The 2020’s are continuing that pace with five freshmen earning titles in the first two championships of the new decade.

2022 PIAA Undefeated Qualifiers

Pennsylvania high school wrestling seasons are long and rigorous. To make it to the state tournament without a blemish is an accomplishment in itself. This year, 12 wrestlers made it Hershey with a 0 in the L column; 6 in AA, and 6 in AAA.
