Are there medal chances simmering inside of the 2023 USA U20 Greco-Roman World roster? Considering that one of the athletes, heavyweight Aden Attao (Suples) is a returning bronze from the event and another, Joel Adams (67 kg, TBW), won a World title on the U17 level a year ago, hopes are high in that regard.

Women’s wrestling is in a conundrum.

Despite New Jersey being one of the premier wrestling states in the country, you don’t tend to see the full representation of that talent at Fargo. Still, Team New Jersey is bringing a team with some experience to the FargoDome, with eight All-Americans from last year returning in 2023. Look for some of these unranked guys and girls to be in the national rankings in a couple weeks.

California is coming off one of the most impressive Fargo performances in recent memory. In 2022, the Golden State finished third or better in five out of the six divisions, including team titles in both Junior Women’s freestyle and 16U Greco-Roman. California came away with 72 total All-American finishes.

Team Wisconsin will be represented by roughly 200 of the state’s most talented wrestlers at this year's Fargo Nationals. Wisconsin continues to be a top contender in both Greco-Roman age groups and its freestyle teams both finished in the top 5 in last year’s tournament. Wisconsin looks to build on last year’s results and tack onto its impressive list of Fargo All-Americans. Speaking of All-Americans, Wisconsin returns 24 of those, including 2021 double champ Koy Hopke, who did not compete at Fargo last year. All signs point to another strong week at Fargo for Team Wisconsin.

Coming off a strong performance last year that included a 16U men’s freestyle team title a tournament total of 50 All-American finishes, Pennsylvania is headed back to Fargo with another powerful contingent in both men’s and women’s freestyle as well as Greco-Roman. Pennsylvania has 15 All-Americans returning to the FargoDome this year on the men’s side and six more in women’s freestyle. Expect Pennsylvania to come prepared to push for a team title in each division.

The 2022 USA Greco-Roman U20 World Team is more than a solid roster of 10 athletes, and more than just a bundle of several supposed can’t-miss prospective Senior competitors. This year’s rendering of an American Junior World Team, which includes only one holdover from ‘21 (Kodiak Stephens), is an eclectic mix with each wrestler beholden to customized individual strengths — and varying degrees of relevant international experience.

The Fargo women’s divisions are in the books. When the Junior division concluded Wednesday, California was back on top, three wrestlers doubled up, winning both the 16U and Junior national titles, and one went back-to-back.

Fargo, the annual Mecca of high school wrestling, is upon us. The 16U and Junior Nationals begin Saturday at the FargoDome.

While last year's historic showing will not be easy to duplicate, Team Michigan still brings plenty of firepower to Fargo.

After taking the freestyle 16U National Dual title and finishing as the runner-up in the Junior National Duals, Team Ohio is looking to improve on their finishes from last year in Fargo. Ohio is bringing a solid squad in both the 16U and Junior Divisions with nearly 15 ranked wrestlers as well as several just outside of the national rankings.

The group from the Golden State is headed to Fargo with gold medals in mind after putting three in the finals in 2021 and crowning three champs in 2019. Team California is led by a number of standouts from some of the nation’s best high school programs like Buchanan, Clovis, Gilroy and more.

Wisconsin has been trending upward in recent years — perhaps on a steeper trajectory than any other state when it comes to Fargo freestyle statistics. Wisconsin was one of two states to finish among the top five last year in the team race in both the 16U and Junior divisions. From 2011 through 2019, Wisconsin averaged 8.44 All-Americans per year in the men’s freestyle divisions. Last year, it produced 20, including individual champions Koy Hopke and Ben Kawczynski.

Minnesota has been one of the nation’s top forces in Fargo during the past decade, collecting 28 individual freestyle titles since 2011 and 29 more in Greco. It’s a state that values year-round wrestling and emphasizes the Olympic disciplines. As a result, Minnesota produced 17 freestyle All-Americans last summer in Fargo, including 11 on the runner-up 16U team, many of whom are on this year's roster.
